  • Can I take my child to visit Miles for Smiles if the mobile unit is not scheduled at my child's school?

Yes. Even though Miles for Smiles is mobile dentistry, we still operate as a dental home to our patients of record.

  • Is it common to see children with marks on their faces after undergoing a dental procedure?

Local anesthetic may be used for some dental procedures to numb the area of your child’s mouth that is being treated. He or she will be numb in that area for an average of two hours after the appointment. If the treatment was done on the lower jaw, the tongue, teeth, lower lip and surrounding tissue will be numb. If the treatment was done on the upper jaw, the teeth, upper lip and surrounding tissue will be numb. Most children do not fully understand the effects of local anesthesia, and they may chew, scratch, suck, or play with the numb areas. These actions can cause serious injuries, so please monitor your child closely for approximately two hours following the appointment. We also recommend that you keep your child on a soft diet until the anesthetic has worn off.

  • What is a Papoose board?

It’s a medical stabilization board meant to limit the person’s movement it is commonly used on a child patient. It’s not as a punishment, it’s threefold. One to protect the patient, protect the dentist and accomplish what needs to be done. Patients would not be left alone restrained, unattended, or forced to receive any dental treatment. Miles for Smiles will NOT use Papoose boards on the mobile.
